Mrkonjić Grad is a town and municipality in western Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in the Bosanska Krajina, between Banja Luka and Jajce.

Mrkonjić Grad is a town and municipality in western Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in the Bosanska Krajina, between Banja Luka and Jajce.

The town was originally named ‘Leusaba’, then Jajce, in medieval times it was named Varčarevo and later Varčar Vakuf. As Mrkonjić grad, it was first time mentioned in 1925. One of the most important Roman main roads that connected the Adriatic Sea to the Sava River and Pannonia was passing just through this town. 

Mrkonjić Grad is known for one historic event - the first session of ZAVNOBIH, enabling the establishment of statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Lake Balkana is the most important touristic attraction in this area, located 4 kilometers away from Mrkonjici. There are two artificially created lakes, with natural environment and beautiful places for camping. This city is surrounded from all sides by mountains, Lisina, Durmitor, Čemernica, Manjača, Ovčara.
