Stolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The lovely museum-city of Stolac, a town of extremely antique origins, is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 40 km south of Mostar. Because of its favourable natural environment, Stolac and its area have been settled since ancient times. Its rich hunting-grounds along with other natural benefits attracted prehistoric man, and later the Illyrians, Romans and Slavs, all of whom left a wealth of anthropological evidence.
Stolac is known for many stone bridges, while all of them are specific in terms of architecture and have their own aesthetic value. The most famous and the oldest one is Gornja Ćuprija, also called Inat Ćuprija, which is one of the most important buildings which survived the damage of the 1990's war. If you are interested in Ottoman architecture, Mosque of the Sultan Selim and Mosque of Uzunovići will be fascinating for you.
Another astonishing place is the Radimlja Necropolis, located 2 km from Stolac. It is one of the most fascinating and mysterious places of this area where you can find dozens of „stećci“, decorated with different paintings.
