According to a local legend the bridge was built by a shepherd boy called Mehmed, who found a treasure with his brother and split it equally. From his money Mehmet built this bridge and his brother Sinan built a mosque in Bistrik, known as Kecedzija mosque.

From 15th to 19th century this bridge served as the main connection between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, Macedonia and Istanbul. However, the bridge became well-known as the place where travelers were hosted and welcomed and it was a meeting point of dignities coming to Sarajevo from the east.
