Maglaj is a town and municipality in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina and it is one of 12 municipalities of the Zenica-Doboj Canton. Maglaj originated in the 14th century. The river Bosna goes through this town.

Maglaj is a town and municipality in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina and it  is one of 12 municipalities of the Zenica-Doboj Canton. Maglaj originated in the 14th century. The river Bosna goes through this town.

The city lies 25 km south of Doboj and the whole municipality has a population of 43,000. Maglaj is placed in the northern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The old Maglaj has an old town with mosques as well as traditional houses and a fortress from the Ottoman Empire. 

The new section of Maglaj is made up of modern architecture that was started in the 1950s, and became, on a large scale, developed until 1991. From 1929 to 1941, Maglaj was part of the Vrbas Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

The city submit a long blocade by Bosnian Serbs forces between 1993 and 1994 during the Bosnian War.  It was period when the area was the scene of heavy fighting and the population had to be supplied by airdrops.
