Certainly the most precious gem of National Park Sutjeska is Strict Nature Reserve Perućica, one of rarely preserved rainforests of Europe.

The forest stands of Perućica had no equal in the Dinarides, not only by its standing stock and height, but also by its composition, physical featrues and beauty.  Birth, life, dying and rebirth, this eternal cycle, goes on without any human intervention.

It is surrounded by the mountain tops of Maglić, Volujak and Sniježnica, and the Sutjeska River Canyon separates it from Zelengora Mountain. The area of Perućica is 1,291 ha and is 6 km long and 1 to 3 kilometer wide.

True wealth of versatile flora can be found in Perućica as well as in other parts of the Park, including several endemic and rare species. There are more than 170 species of trees shrubs and over 1,000 species of herbaceous plants registered in Perućica.

The view from “Vidikovac” (Dragoš Sedlo) in Perućica and Skakavac waterfall, where water falls in the heart of primeval-forest from the height of more than 70 meters, fills every person with the satisfaction that this small part of nature with rich and multifuctional biodiversity, was preserved for current and future generations.
