Ashkenazi Synagogue is one of the largest and oldest synagogues in Europe.

Ashkenazi Synagogue is one of the largest and oldest synagogues in Europe. This one survived the 1990s war and the 3 year siege of Sarajevo. It was built in 1902 according to the design of Karlo Paržik in pseudo Moorish style, and it is located on the left bank of the river Miljacka. 

Ashkenazi Jews arrived in Sarajevo with the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 19th century. An Ashkenazi synagogue, was built in 1902 in an elaborate Moorish Revival style. Designed by Karlo Paržik, its highly decorated neo-Moorishstyle was a popular choice for synagogues in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The prayer hall is beautifully decorated.
