Vjetrenica is one of the most important and the largest cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in the Popovo field in Ravno, West Herzegovina. The cave is situated in Popovo Polje that is placed in a southernmost regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Its entrance is near the village of Zavala. In the warmer parts of the year, a cold air blows from its entrance. Popovo Polje is one of the largest polje in our country. It is famous for its karsticfeatures as well as phenomenons, and for Trebišnjica River.

This river flows through the polje. The cave has been described as well as explored to a total of about 6.7 km in length. Vjetrenica cave is the richest cave in the world in terms of subterranean biodiversity.

It includes among more than two hundred different species are registered in it, a great number of them are narrow endemic, 15 are stenoendemic. However, about 37 were discovered in Vjetrenica for the first time.
